- Bet – This is waging money. How much a player will bet is dependent on many different variables.
- Fold – When the player gives up his/her cards and does not place a bet. The player was dealt bad cards and no winning combination can be made. Once the player folds they are removing themselves from that specific round of play and may enter the next round
- Call – When players match the amount of the bet. For example, if the player before you bet $2 you would match his bet of $2. If you call their bet you are agreeing to bet the same exact amount they made
- Raise – When the players add more to the pot or bets higher. This increases the post size and can make for more exciting game play. If the player to your right raises the bet, you must match it, fold or place an even higher bet. The rules to placing a raise depend on the type of poker game being played. In Texas hold ‘em there can only be 4-5 raises. In no limit poker there is absolutely no limit on the amount of raises or the amount of chips placed into the pot. Many players prefer no limit games due to the fact they are able to “go all in” whenever they want
- Flop – After all bets have been placed and equal three cards are turned face up. After these cards are turned, the next set of betting takes place. The player next to the deal must place their bet first. The flop is the second round of betting in the poker game of Texas hold ‘em.
- Turn - This happens after all bets are equal and a fourth card is turned over. Next, another set of betting is placed. Well known as the fourth card. The turn is followed by another round of placing bets or making wagers.
- River – The last and final round of betting. The river is the last and final card to be turned over by the dealer. This is also the final round of betting and all players must now show their cards. The best hand of the players still in the game wins the pot. This river card is also known as the “fifth street”. Players will have a total of seven cards to make a winning combination.
