Chip Making

Let us come to the types of poker chips and the mode of its making. The poker chips have to be made in such a way that no one else should be able to counterfeit by any others in any way. The poker chips are made with the help of complicated graphics and edge spot patterns with which the chips will be fabricated.

The process for fabricating and making the chips is a trade secret. This is also expensive, and the high pressure compression molding machines are used for making the poker chips. Though it is believed that clay is the typical material used for the poker chips, it is not the clay alone used in the process of making poker chips. The clay is also a content in the material used for the chips. The clay is added to a ceramic material for getting the texture and weight in making of the chips.

The chips were manufactured by using clay during 1960s and 1970s which was breakable and hence the manufacturing of clay chips of that period has since been dispensed with. The presently manufactured modern chips will have typically very slight clay component, say 1-10%, and it varies with the manufacturers.

The weight of the single chip in American casinos will be between 9.5 grams to 10 grams. This varies very much with the manufacturer and construction, in case of chips sold for home use. The chips meant for home use will have common designs depicting the six faces of a die, or the fact of the chip will have suit symbols around its edge. The chips so meant for home use will be made of ABS plastic and the injection molding technology is used in its manufacturing. Some chips which are slugs are also made with molding around a small metal disc for getting the weight.

The European chips sometimes are made with Mother of Pearl. The shape of higher value chips will be sometimes like plaques.
