There are four critical skills needed to succeed in the game of Texas hold ‘em.  Math skills, psychological skills, discipline and a clear understanding of risk and rewards.

Math

Players must have a basic knowledge of math.  Texas hold ‘em isn’t just a game of fate and luck.  It is important to understand the odds of your next hand.  Many experienced players use a specific strategy or system to calculate their odds.  While watching a professional Texas Hold ‘em game, you will notice the professionals taking a great deal of time before making their next move.  During this time they are evaluating the situation they are in and making a decision which will hopefully benefit them in the long haul.  Most seasoned pros are able to figure out the pot odds.  These educated players also understand when the correct time to fold is.  Most beginners have a tendency to play every single hand, whether it is good for them or not.

Psychological

Excellent poker player are not selfish or needy.  They understand that Texas hold ‘em is a very social game.  A poker player that understands how to get into the other players minds and intimidate them into folding.  They try to visualize the other player’s cards and which move they might make next.  An experienced Texas hold ‘em player can manipulate the other players without even saying a word.  Many times poker is not about the game, it’s about the players.  It is also key to have an excellent understanding of the psychology of poker.  Poker is all about how you deal with the other players, simple as that.  Texas hold ‘em is a game about bluffing and leading the other players in another direction, so that you have the advantage. 

Discipline

Excellent poker players understand that they may not win every match.  Well disciplined players understand when to hold their cards and when to fold them.  A well disciplined player understands their areas of weakness and does what ever they can to hide it.  These kinds of players are aware of their set budget and never go over board.  Disciplined players also know how to quit when they are ahead and not to get too involved in one specific hand.  These kinds of players take advantage of weak, inexperienced players and are not ashamed to do so. Experienced poker players don’t rely on a lucky hand, they hope the other player gets a bad hand.  These players have a different strategy and are tight and aggressive.  Well disciplined players do not become too emotional at the tables, they follow basic etiquette and don’t believe in fate or other superstitions.

Risks & Rewards

Good poker players understand not to get too emotional during game play.  Players who understand the risks and rewards of Texas hold ‘em.  They understand when it is the right time to take a big risk.  For example, an experienced player will take a long shot risk which is not in their favor if the reward is worth it.  Also, if the risk is inside their budget and bankroll.  Good Texas hold ‘em players not only play for the rewards, but play for general enjoyment of the game.  Poker isn’t completely about the cash reward.  It is also about the sense of pride from playing out a game using all the skill you posses.
