There are many different types of poker styles that can generally be summed up into 3 main categories. Is it important to understand these categories so that you can read your opponent and figure out their next move.

Passive-Loose

These types of players will constantly call, no matter how low their odds of losing are.  They are known as the optimists of poker and sometimes they push their luck.  These people play as if every hand is going to hit the jackpot and they will become extremely wealthy.  They do not believe in making big risks, but will hang on until the very end.  They usually end up splitting the pot with the other players and are able to continue playing for extended amounts of time.  The passive-loose players are not known for their ability to bluff well and they usually spend most of their game calling or checking.  This type of play is not suggested and many players end up loosing miserably.

Aggressive-Loose

Aggressive-loose players are the risk takers.  They are extremely aggressive and are willing to take chances to hit the big jackpot.  They love to raise and do it often throughout the game.  Aggressive-loose players are able to take control of smaller pots and end up being unsuccessful in possessing the big pots.

Tight

Tight players are conservative and will fold quickly.  These players hardly ever make any raises, but will call often.  There are many different tight players.  Passive tight players don’t enjoy confrontation and are very tight with their bank roll and placing bets.  Most often they take a great deal of time to make a decision.  Most often they will fold and wait for the perfect moment to bet and take the pot.  Aggressive-tight players fold even quicker than the passive players.  They will fold automatically when the odds are not in their favor.  If they see the flop with decent cards, this is when they will take a chance and usually go all in.
