Bluffing is an element in the poker game. The poker refers to a game of cards. There are many types of poker games. The poker game can be played by two or more players. The players go for betting during the play on the value of their hands in the attempt of winning. The poker is basically a game of gambling. The origin of poker game is believed to be the Asia and was first played in U.S.

The poker game having started as a traditional cutthroat gambling, has become now an international social pastime.

The deception is an element of poker game. Bluffing is a highly played trick in poker. The bluffing in poker is mainly to deceive other players to make them think that the bluffer has the better hand even when he is not actually. The bluffer needs other players to think that he is really has that better hand, only when the bluff may work. The idea of bluffing, is loved by many of the beginning players in poker and misuse it often.

Generally under certain circumstances when it requires lot to do with the information the player assumes about other players, the value of bluff increases. It will be difficult from this vagueness to give definitive reasons or places to bluff. Some advices about the play and the times less generalized to bluff are given below. Some more ideas and perspectives on deception in poker are also given in end.

Typical reasons to bluff

In a simple thinking, a couple can be tricked easily than a crowd. Chances will be better with fewer hands out, that no one has made a reasonable hand. Though this could be a common thing, many players would not believe the bluffer. Some of the players try to keep the bluffer honest, by staying in the hand. Hence, sometimes, persistent bluffing may be needed over the period of betting rounds. It would cost the bluffer, if others do not fall for it. The bluffer will have to assess the players before bluffing.

When the bluffer is against tight players

The players who have tendency to fold easily become the major targets of a bluff. The players bet simply just like that, which may help gathering information about the bluffer. The bluffer will have to think twice to try it again in future rounds against very tight players and when they do not fall for the early bluff (pre-flop, flop). That gives the meaning that they have something. The bluffer has to think and determine if they have made a hand or drawing hand. It is better therefore, the bluffer knows the players well.

On the River

It is more important to know especially when the apparent drawing hands missed. This is possible when the players follow the rule, ‘the moment the player knows he cannot win, he should his cards’. Bluffing with a weak hand will be often a good idea, like when holding ace-high or lowest pair, where pot odds make the players to just stay. It will only be semi-bluffing then.

Bluffer in late position and everyone is checking

The bluffer will have to gauge himself his position  and the situation in the game. The position of some players is likely to force them out, but not necessarily all. This could be a common bluff again and makes many players to stay in just due to bet odds. Sometimes, it may be to keep the bluffer honest. This again becomes another example making bluffer to realize to be persistent over the betting rounds.

Bluffer bet Pre-Flop and missed

This will happen when the players do not know that the bluffer missed. The bluffer before getting into this should really evaluate to board, since it could be dangerous otherwise. When AK is missed sometimes or sometimes with missing 99, it may good to bluff. But, the bluffer will have to really feel this.

Bluffing gives fear to other players

It is important to know how the other players understand the bluffer. Because if he has given a good play and has won a hand, the players may respect him by remarking as ‘nice hand’. It is likely that the bluffer is playing right with his bluffing, the other players may fold to his bluffing. If the bluffer plays another winning hand in the same way, it will be the trick. The bluffer can make others to play with his ‘here we go again’ action.

When the flop is not so great

In case of some players having only an overcard, they will fold automatically. The rainbow flop of 2, 6, 9 will not make many players to have much. This again poses as an example of a bluff going horribly crooked way. Without popping up of only more low cards, one will not be much persistent in such a case. Once again, it is a hint to know other players.

Pre-Flop on the button and everyone else has folded

Usually, using this with tight players best to the bluffer’s left. It can change a bluff to a good hand with luck and right flop and hence could be a good play.

When there is a pair on the board

When the pair is 88 or lower, this can be useful. There are chances of these cards having been folded or in the deck still. The bluffer has to evaluate the hand very carefully in this situation if the others do call. In this great situation, it is to read the tells of non-players in the game. Giving away the fact that the bluffer had a card, is easier than if he has it.

It is again to remind to keep these common reasons to bluff. Known by many players of these reasons, it may not work most of the times. Knowing the other players always is the main thing.
