The prime period of Gardena in 1970s, California saw the playing of California Lowball as a primary poker game. Though the introduction of the games, stud poker and community card poker, had lessened the popularity of California Lowball, the game is played even today.

This game is played with the hand values used as ace to five low, the deck will have a single joker. The first betting is not checked by the players, this game is played with blinds than with antes. The right of a player to win the money placed in the pot after the draw, is forefeited if the player with a 7 high hand or better checks after the draw.

In another common rule, checking by a player on the second betting round may not be allowed to raise on the subsequent round, in the low-limit games. In the pot limit or no limit structure of the game, the second rule is never used.
